….1935 Vintage Riley “Beetle-Back” Sports Special Unique, Historic ex Racing car Riley Chassis Nr 6027553 This much-modified former VSCC Racer was constructed from vintage Riley components. The wide track chassis was shortened, underslung and configured to a track car. A former owner raced this well-known single-seater for 25 years, and the car proved itself over many seasons. In the last 6 years the car has been rebodied from racing trim to a period, lightweight 2-seat alloy body (with beetle-back styling) for use as a road car in the style of a Sports Tourer from the pre-war era. Currently fitted with a Dolomite Sprint multi-valve engine skilfully mated to the Wilson Pre-select Gearbox with electric overdrive. A Riley 12/4 engine should bolt straight back in if a new owner wishes to return the car to the VSCC competition circuit, however it would not drive as smoothly or as quietly as it does with the current combination. I can source a 12/4 engine (disassembled) if required. ….I give you the opportunity to own this wonderful example of VW Beetle known as Billy the Bug. This beetle was carefully restored by my fair hands and was completed 1 ½ years ago. The beetle was used on a daily basis as a run around and has provided enjoyable trouble free motoring throughout. I did not go into this restoration blind and have over the years restored a number of VW beetles, campers as a rather expensive hobby. It was originally restored for a close friend but has found its way back to me. And I was considering keeping this but having a handful of dubs seemed a bit selfish and greedy so I have decided to let this one go. The restoration was done on a budget using all the bits and pieces I have collected (as you do) over the years. It was a useful way of creating more space which I could fill with more VW stuff that I might need one day….maybe! Whilst restoring the beetle I was amazed at its condition. Though welding was required (he ain’t no spring chicken) I have seen beetles in far worse condition and the work required was far less than I expected. The benefit of stripping down and rebuilding this beetle is that I know that it is in extremely good condition and everything is in tip-top working order. The beetle has been sensitively modified going for a resto-cal type look but without going over the top. The car looks great as it is it also provides someone a great canvas upon which they can leave their mark. Customisations include: • The beetle was originally a semi-automatic. Though this is a nice perk that made driving a little more laid back, this has been converted to a manual gearbox. Not only has this improved fuel economy but it means that future engine modifications and servicing is made easier for the new owner. • The dashboard has been smoothed out giving it a clean, crisp look. The dash is colour coded to the car and installed within it is a modified heater, which keeps not only the car but the driver warmer than it would be in a standard beetle. • The beetle has been fitted with an adjustable front beam. This gives the beetle a lovely stance but gives the new owner the opportunity to adjust the ride height to suit their needs/wants. • The bumpers, steering wheel, door cards and wheels (including the spare) have been colour coded and nicely giving the car a wonderful soft colour that complements the green of the car. • The interior seats were modified prior to my ownership and have been kept as they were as the deep red colour of the front and rear seats look good (if its not broke, don’t fix it!) • The bug has been de-trimmed minimising the amount of shiny chrome that can be seen. This is offset by the custom dealing that was used on both sides at the bottom of the doors. Other good points worth highlighting are • The beetle was registered in 1969 so is tax exempt! • The beetle comes with front disc brakes as standard. However be warned, the braking efficiency is very different from a modern day car. • The bug sings along the roads with a 1500 engine.one of vw”s best Now you are not going to be breaking any land speed records but it has enough grunt to get around comfortably. • The number plate is unique and one that is worth a few hundred pounds. This will be included with the auction. • The motor comes with 12 months MOT. • three new tyres both fronts and spare 145 nankangs ,rear has 165 firestones.with loads of life left. • The engine has recently been serviced and the car is able to be driven away by the winning bidder. Not so good points • This is not a new car, it is a car that is in its 40’s and therefore needs to be treated with a little respect and care. • Though the heater is better than the standard in the winter the car can take a while to warm up. In the middle of winter this will need to be considered. • Usual stuff now. You are bidding to buy this motor so please no tire kickers and no I am not interested in any px and won’t swap it for magical beans or sell it for pocket money. The reserve has been set at what is a reasonable level for a pre-season bargain, which I am in no real rush to sell.
