1967 VW Volkswagen Beetle 1500 Bug

….1967 Volkswagen Beetle 1500 Chassis number starts 117* (see photo) Being a ‘67 1500 it has early bonnet, sloping headlamps, 1200 style rear lamps, blade bumpers, early dashboard (uncut), mechanical fuel gauge, under bonnet fuel filler, later bigger side windows and 4 stud wheels with front disc brakes and 12V electrics etc RHD originally imported from South Africa hence on a ‘68 “G” plate (based on approx “year of first use”). Log book states “date of manufacture unknown, originally registered overseas” Car was painted purple in late 90s and then dry stored from 2004 until February 2017 when I purchased it, recommissioned (servicing, fuel lines, battery, tyres, brakes etc. and MOT’d. Since then I’ve painted it inside and out, lowered it, replaced the trim etc. and used it most weekends and for some commuting to work. MOT’d (MOT exempt from May this year according to new Legislation for Historic Vehicles) Tax Exempt Painted Matt black inside and out Lowered adjustable front end (all new) Rear lowered 1 spline 4” front wheels with 135 tyres Wheels painted gloss black 1300cc engine with 1600 barrels/pistons All red rear light lenses In the last 6-8 months it has had the following: New battery Exhaust Window seals 4 New tyres (135 front / 165 rear) Puma adjustable front beam 2.5” dropped spindles All ball joints (German Mehle) All track rod ends – inner and outer (German) Front shock absorbers and mounts Caster shins and long bolts Camber adjustment nuts Beam seals Front wheel bearings Polyurethane steering coupling and new bolts Service items Chrome body trim Number plates Receipts available for many parts Good points: -Straight body and free from rust in many of the typical problem areas (door pillars and posts, gutters, seams etc.) -1600 motor pulls well -Good gearbox / selection -Disc front brakes -Handles and rides well with so many new suspension components (but is a low car so don’t expect miracles!) -Good clean full headliner -Good front seats (replaced them recently with a better original front pair) -Uncut dash with original blanking plate -All electrics (except horn) work -Good tidy and original wiring loom -Driven most weekends locally (30 mile radius) and been reliable (probably done a couple of thousand miles but haven’t done motorways or major journeys) -car garaged Not so good points: I’m going to be ridiculously picky here as I can’t be doing with messers. Bear in mind this is a 50+ year old regularly driven VW and not a new car or a show car (as reflected in price!) -Car no longer has some of the ‘67 only features (rear valance and engine lid – replaced with a 64-66 lid) and doors/handles replaced with post 67 items at some point in its life time) -Passenger door hinge is stiff from storage as wasn’t opened for 10 years and needs looking at -Window winder mechanisms need replacement (they slip) -Horn not working (was before I replaced steering coupling so probably connection issue) -Rear passenger side bumper mount needs attention (can supply repair panel and new irons but no bumper) -MOT due end April, advisory last year was “surface rust on underside” therefore may need some attention at some point but has been garaged since last MOT -Car is in a relatively rat rod style, Matt paint etc but well done. In summary, head turner! generally a solid base, plenty of money spent, great stance, lots of good points and drives well. Still jobs to do (and always will be it’s over 50 years old!) and opportunity to put your own stamp on it. Roof rack and collection of spare parts by negotiation. Car located near Barnstaple, North Devon. EX32 Please no time wasters or messers, I don’t have much spare time and I know my way around VWs! Thanks Si
